AKC Show Height Standards
Height is measured at the sholders. Minature Poodles are between
11"-15" high
Below 11" is a Toy Poodle. Above 15" is a Standard Poodle.
Our male, Eddie is 10" high, therefore a Toy
Our female Challie is 12" high, therefore a Mini
Our female Lucy is 11 1/2" high, therefore technically a Mini,
but also almost a Toy
We spent a lot of time (years) trying to decide on the breed of dog
we would be happiest spending the rest of our lives with. Finally we
decided it would be toy poodles. From all we had read about them,
they sounded perfect , but we wouldn't know until we actually
purchased a male, Eddie, and a female, Challie.
Well, it didn't take long to realized we had made the best choice of
our life. They have made us so happy. Rose hasn't laughed so much in
her life as she watched these two puppies grow up playing all the
time. They play hide and seek with each other and carry their stuffed
toys all over the house and even outside thru the dog door.
They absolutely love it when we have visitors. They want to be held
by everyone. They love to show off their tricks I have taught them.
They are so smart and learn everything so fast. They are great ranch
dogs, they love the horses and any animal where we visit with them.
I never trained dogs to do tricks before but only had to show them a
few times what I wanted them to do and they would do it. They sit,
lay down, roll over, walk on hind legs and twirl around. They push a
toy shopping cart while walking on hind legs. Eddie can crawl on his
belly and they walk across a suspended 2x4 plank. We have a wooden
high chair (real child size) and they can climb up to sit in it.
I'm handicapped from a stroke and can't walk very far, so the puppies
give me something fun to do in training them. They also ride in the
basket of the scooter I use on our horse ranch so they can go safely
around and visit all the horses. Challie loves to lick the noses when
the horses put their heads over the fence to see the puppies. Some of
the horses like that and some curl up their lips as if to say
"ugh, dog kisses, I could do without that."
If you have no intention of owing a poodle you had better not see or
hold a phantom colored little poodle puppy (Charlie's color). The
rare poodle color, black with tan marking like a Doberman or
rottwiller marking, is so irresistible you will probably have to have
one. When we went to pick up Eddie we had not intended to get a
second puppy at that time but when we saw Challie (she is younger) we
put a deposit on her that day. We are so glad we have two puppies as
they play do cute together and each one has a little different
personality which makes it even more fun.. We do get a lot of
attention everywhere we take them.
We plan to breed them when they grow up. Already people want to be on
a waiting list. I know I'll want to keep them, but we have agreed to
sell them as we ill still stay busy with Challie and Eddie continuing
their trick training and also they will be visiting convalescent
homes and retirement centers and anywhere they can bring a smile to a face.
On August 23, 2008 we picked up a 2nd female, a red Toy Poodle we
call Lucy.
